Anyone, Someone, No-one!
Galatians 6:3 says “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself”.
Here is a warning against pride. The main idea of this verse is that anyone who thinks they are a someone is really a no-one. There are so many Christians walking around today looking down the barrel of their noses who have an ‘I’m so high and mighty’ attitude. They think that they are so holy that it is impossible for them to sin. The bible however has a thing or two to say about this.
From this verse we see plain and simple that if I man thinks that he is something when he is really nothing he is deceiving himself. Pride is like a pen mark on your face; everyone knows that you have it except for you! This is why it’s such a dangerous sin. So when someone thinks that they are something when they are really nothing they are only doing themselves harm. Everyone else knows they are nothing, but the person in question cannot see it, blinded by their own pride.
You may be asking well what’s so bad about pride? Well God thinks it’s pretty bad! Of the seven things God hates (Proverbs 6:16-19) a proud look is the first thing. God has to detest it a lot for it to be top of the list! Pride is a dangerous thing to have. When you are prideful you start to look down on others. You start to mock their misfortune. You edify yourself instead of God. Your conversation is over-run with yourself instead of the gospel. Your eyes are focused on other people and how what you’re better instead of being focused on God. Pride can be summed up as a form of idolatry. You are putting yourself before God which He doesn’t like. It is a dangerous thing.
So let me ask you today, do you think you’re something when you’re really nothing? Are you proud of all your achievements you have without thanking God for his help in achieving them? Are you so focused on yourself and what you have and what you can get that you have forgotten God?
God hates pride. I ask you today, do some self-searching and see if you are harbouring pride and if you are let it go. Don’t think yourself something when you are really nothing. – A.
